My presentation will cover ~30 years of paleomagnetic research in China and its relationship to one of the most important problems in the Earth sciences-namely how topography gets built in time and space, using the Tibetan plateau as an example. I will explain why I think extrusion of Indochina occurred in relation to the India-Asia collision. I will also discuss the problems with using paleomagnetism to constrain paleolatitude. Estimating paleolatitude from paleomagnetic data remains problematic for sediments, which has led to some of the discrepant interpretations surrounding Tibet. Using volcanic rocks that did not average geomagnetic secular variation for tectonic interpretations is another source of discrepancy.

I will talk about the full process from the acquisition of the data with the Sushibar, our latest improvements to the system and some interesting applications that naturally lead to the refinement method to get reliable results from vectorial measurements.

I will be talking about how we can recognize dynamic topography (topography caused by density variations and convective flow in the mantle) in the geologic record. More specifically, I’m studying this problem in the northwestern US, related to the Yellowstone plume. I will discuss an interesting pattern we have discovered around a regional unconformity in Montana and if we can relate this to dynamic topography created by the Yellowstone plume.
